You ran your numbers through a free calculator, got 2.3 percent, tried a second calculator, and got 5.9 percent for the same post. Neither one is broken. They are dividing by different things, and nobody told you which denominator you were supposed to use.
Here is the part that trips up most solopreneurs and agency owners: LinkedIn does not show an engagement rate percentage for personal profile posts at all. It shows one for company Pages. For your own posts, you get raw counts and you do the math yourself. This guide shows you the three real formulas, exactly where each input lives in LinkedIn analytics, and one post run through all of them so you can see the spread with your own eyes.

What LinkedIn actually counts as an engagement
Start with the source, not with a blog post. In LinkedIn's own Help documentation for Page content analytics, engagement rate is defined as:
"the ratio of interactions per impressions on your post. Interactions include clicks, reactions, comments, and shares."
That single sentence explains most of the confusion in this topic. LinkedIn counts clicks as an interaction. Clicks here means clicks on your content, your name, or your logo by a signed-in member, and LinkedIn explicitly excludes reposts, reactions and comments from the click count so nothing is double counted.
Almost every free calculator you will find uses reactions plus comments plus shares and quietly drops clicks. On a post with a document carousel or a "see more" line, clicks can easily be larger than every other interaction combined. Drop them and your number halves.

Impressions count repeat views. Members reached does not. If the same person sees your post three times while scrolling, that is three impressions and one member reached. On a post that runs for several days, impressions routinely land 30 to 60 percent above members reached, which is exactly why the two denominators produce such different percentages.
The three engagement rate formulas (and when each one is right)
There are three defensible denominators. Everything else is a variation on these.
1. Engagement rate by impressions. This is LinkedIn's own definition and the one most benchmark reports use.
(Total interactions / Impressions) x 100
Use it when you want to answer "of the times this post appeared on a screen, how often did it earn an action?" It is the strictest of the three and the right default if you are comparing yourself to a published benchmark.
2. Engagement rate by members reached. Same numerator, unique-people denominator.
(Total interactions / Members reached) x 100
Use it when you want to answer "of the actual humans who saw this, what share did something?" This is the most intuitive number for a solopreneur, because it maps to people rather than screen loads. It always reads higher than the impressions version.
3. Engagement rate by followers. The one influencer marketplaces use.
(Total interactions / Total followers) x 100
Use it only when you are comparing accounts of different sizes, or when someone else is asking for it. It is the weakest signal for your own content, because it rewards low reach. A post that flopped and reached almost nobody but got 12 loyal comments will score beautifully.

The rule that matters more than the choice: pick one, write it at the top of your tracking sheet, and never switch. A number that moves because you changed the formula teaches you nothing.
Where to find each number in LinkedIn analytics
The inputs live in two different places depending on whether the post went out from your profile or your company Page.
For a personal profile post. Open the post, click the analytics line underneath it (it usually reads as the impressions count), and you get a Discovery block and an Engagement block. Discovery gives you impressions, in-network and out-of-network splits, and members reached. Engagement gives you reactions, comments, reposts, saves, and sends on LinkedIn, plus profile viewers and followers gained from that post. On link posts you also get visits to links in the post. There is no engagement rate percentage anywhere on this screen. You have every input and none of the output.
For a company Page post. Page analytics does the arithmetic for you and shows an engagement rate field directly, calculated on LinkedIn's definition: all interactions including clicks, divided by impressions.
This asymmetry is the single most useful thing to understand about this topic. When someone quotes you an engagement rate benchmark, they almost certainly measured it on Pages, where LinkedIn hands the number over. Your personal profile number is one you computed with your own choice of formula. Comparing the two is not a like-for-like comparison, and most articles on this subject never mention it.
Two smaller inputs people forget: saves and sends. Sends on LinkedIn means someone forwarded your post in a DM, which is the highest-intent action on the platform and does not appear in a single standard engagement rate formula. Track them separately. They predict inbound conversations better than reactions do.
One post, five answers: the worked example
Here is a real-shaped post with real-shaped numbers. Use it as a template and swap in your own.
The inputs:
- Impressions: 8,400
- Members reached: 5,900
- Followers: 3,200
- Reactions: 142
- Comments: 38
- Reposts: 9
- Clicks: 210
Now the arithmetic, spelled out.
LinkedIn's own formula (all interactions including clicks, over impressions). Interactions are 142 + 38 + 9 + 210 = 399. Then 399 divided by 8,400 = 0.0475, so 4.75 percent.
The common calculator formula (reactions, comments and reposts only, over impressions). Interactions are 142 + 38 + 9 = 189. Then 189 divided by 8,400 = 0.0225, so 2.25 percent.
By members reached (no clicks). 189 divided by 5,900 = 0.0320, so 3.20 percent.
By followers (no clicks). 189 divided by 3,200 = 0.0591, so 5.91 percent.
And if you use LinkedIn's fuller numerator over your follower count, which some influencer platforms do: 399 divided by 3,200 = 0.1247, so 12.47 percent.

Why two calculators give you two different numbers
Now that you have seen the spread, the reasons are easy to name. There are five, and every disagreement you will ever encounter is one of them.
- Clicks in or out of the numerator. LinkedIn includes them. Most calculators do not. On a document post this alone can double or halve your result.
- Impressions versus reach versus followers in the denominator. Covered above. The single biggest source of variance.
- Video views counted as engagements. Some tools add video views (LinkedIn counts a view at more than two seconds) into the numerator, which inflates video posts against text posts.
- New follows counted as engagements. Some methodologies include followers gained from the post. LinkedIn's Page definition does not.
- Post-level versus account-level averaging. Averaging the percentages of 30 posts is not the same as dividing total interactions by total impressions across those 30 posts. The first weights a tiny post equally with a huge one. The second is usually the more honest account-level number.
None of these is wrong. They are just different questions. Write down which one you are answering.

Use the median, not the average. One post that got picked up by a large account will drag a 30-post average up by a full percentage point and convince you that a fluke was a strategy. The median tells you what a typical post from you actually does.
Once the sheet has 20 to 30 rows, sort by column J and read the top ten. That list, not the percentage itself, is the output you were after. It tells you which topics and formats to make more of.
What to do once you have the number
A percentage on its own changes nothing. The number is only useful as a filter, and there are three ways to use it.
Compare against yourself first, benchmarks second. Socialinsider's LinkedIn organic benchmarks report, published in March 2026 from 1.3 million posts across 16,645 business Pages, puts the average engagement rate at 5.20 percent, up 8 percent year over year, with native document posts leading at 7.00 percent. That is a genuinely useful reference point, with one caveat that report itself makes plain: it measured business Pages, by impressions, using data collected through the end of 2025. Use it to pick what to repeat, not what to post next. The top ten rows of your sheet are the brief for your next month. It depends entirely on the formula behind it. Ten percent measured by impressions on a post that reached several thousand people is genuinely excellent. Ten percent measured against a follower count of 300 is roughly thirty interactions, which is a normal Tuesday. Before you celebrate or panic, ask which denominator produced it. The same logic applies to 20 percent: by impressions that would be extraordinary and worth studying, while by followers on an account under 1,000 it is fairly ordinary. Any figure above about 8 percent is usually a follower-based calculation on a small account.
Do clicks count as engagement on LinkedIn?
