LinkedIn Recommendation Generator: write one, or ask for one, in a minute
Tell it how you know the person and what they did. Get three specific, believable recommendations, or three polite requests that make saying yes easy.
What do you need?
How to write a LinkedIn recommendation people actually read
Four moves, in this order. The generator above follows them, and you can use them by hand.
- 1
Say how you know them, in one line
Readers weigh a recommendation by who wrote it. "I managed Priya for two years on the checkout team" does more than any adjective that follows.
- 2
Open with one specific moment
LinkedIn shows only the opening lines before "See more". Lead with the project, the save, or the result, not "It is my pleasure to recommend".
- 3
Back two or three strengths with evidence
Pick the strengths the next employer or client cares about, and tie each one to something they actually did. Depth beats a list.
- 4
End with a clear endorsement
Say who should hire or work with them, or what role they would excel in. Do not make the reader infer it.
LinkedIn recommendation templates you can fill in
Replace every bracket with something true and specific. If a bracket has nothing real to go in it, cut the sentence. For finished examples by role, see LinkedIn recommendation examples.
Manager for a direct report
I managed [Name] for [time] on the [team] team, and [one specific thing they did] is still the example I give new hires. [Name] is the person who [strength, with a concrete example]. When [situation], they [what they did], and [the result]. What stands out most is [second strength]. [One sentence of evidence.] Any team hiring a [role] should talk to [Name]. I would work with them again tomorrow.
Colleague or peer
[Name] and I worked side by side on [project] at [company], so I saw their work up close every week. The moment that sums them up: [specific story in one or two sentences]. [Name] is [strength] and [strength]. They [evidence for each, in plain words]. If you need a [role] who [what they are best at], [Name] is the person I would call.
Client for a freelancer or agency
We hired [Name] to [the job], and they [the outcome, in plain words]. What made the difference was how they [working style: communication, speed, judgement]. [One concrete example.] I would hire [Name] again for [type of work], and I have already recommended them to [who, if true].
How to ask for a LinkedIn recommendation
Open their profile, click More, then Request a recommendation. Pick your relationship and your position at the time, then replace LinkedIn's default message with a personal one.
The asks that get answered are short, name the work you did together, and hand over two or three points to mention, so writing it takes minutes instead of an evening. Switch the generator to Ask for one to draft yours, or read the full guide on how to write a LinkedIn recommendation.
Request message template
Hi [Name], I hope [something real about them]. I am updating my LinkedIn profile and a recommendation from you would mean a lot, since you saw my work on [project] first-hand. If it helps, you could mention: - [thing 1] - [thing 2] No pressure at all if now is a busy time, and I would be glad to write one for you too.
Finish the rest of your profile

LinkedIn recommendations: frequently asked questions
What is the character limit for a LinkedIn recommendation?
A LinkedIn recommendation can be up to 3,000 characters, including spaces and line breaks. Most strong recommendations use far less: 500 to 1,200 characters is enough for the relationship, one specific story, two or three strengths and a clear endorsement. The generator keeps every draft inside the limit and shows the count as you edit.
How do I write a recommendation on LinkedIn?
Open the person's profile, click More, then Recommend. Choose your relationship and their position at the time, click Next, paste your recommendation into the message field and click Send. They see it before it goes on their profile and can choose to show it.
How do I ask someone for a LinkedIn recommendation?
Open their profile, click More, then Request a recommendation. You can also start from the Recommendations section of your own profile and click Ask for recommendation. Choose your relationship and position, replace the default text with a personal message, and click Send. Switch the generator to Ask for one to draft that message.
What should a good LinkedIn recommendation include?
How you know the person, one specific moment or result, two or three strengths backed by something they actually did, and a clear line saying who should hire or work with them. Specific beats glowing: a single real example is more convincing than a paragraph of adjectives.
Will the generator make up achievements?
No. It is told to use only the details you type in and never to invent numbers, company names or results. If you do not give a result, it describes the work in plain words instead. Read every draft before you send it and add one detail only you would know.
Is it okay to use AI to write a LinkedIn recommendation?
As a starting draft, yes. Your name goes on it, so every claim has to be true and it should sound like you. Use the drafts to beat the blank page, then edit them in the box before you copy.
Do I need an account to use it?
No. The recommendation generator works without signing up. If you want LinkedIn posts and comments drafted in your own voice every day, that is what LigoSocial does. Try it at ligosocial.com.
